અમેરિકા માં પ્રથમ પગ

તકદીરે  મને ભારત ના બેંગલોર થી ઊંચકીને સીધો અમેરિકા ના પશ્ચિમ છેડે સાન ફ્રાંસિસ્કો માં મૂકી દીધો. મારી નોંધારી પડેલી બેગો ને લઇ ને હું એરપોર્ટ ની બહાર આવ્યો અને રોડ ની ધારે ઉભો  રહ્યો. 

વરસાદી જાન્યુઆરી મહિનો હતો અને  વાદળછાયા વાતાવરણ માં ભૂરા રાખોડી રંગ નું  પ્રભુત્વ.  સુસવાટા મારતો પવન અને ચારે બાજુ પ્રવર્તતી શાંત ઠંડક. કોન્ક્રીટ ના થાંભલા  પર ઊંચકાયેલા વલયાકાર રસ્તાઓ અને એના પર દોડતી  કારો. ઘણા સમય પછી કારો ને દોડતી જોવા મળી, કહો કે એનું નિરીક્ષણ કરવાનો મોકો મળ્યો. છેલ્લે, દસેક વર્ષ પહેલા મુંબઈ ના મરીન ડ્રાઈવ પર રાતે બે વાગે ખરેખર કારો ને  દોડતી જોઈ હતી.

મેં એરપોર્ટ પર થી સિલિકોન વેલી જવા માટે શટલ ટેક્ષી કરી. આપણે અમદાવાદ ના કાલુપુર સ્ટેશને ઉતરીને બાપુનગર જવા માટે શટલિયા રીક્ષા કરીએ એવું જ છે. જો કે ઘણું અલગ પણ છે. કાલુપુર ની શટલ રીક્ષા માં પાછલી સીટ માં બીજા બે-ત્રણ પેસેન્જર સાથે સાંકડમાંકડ જગ્યા માં માંડ શ્વાસ લેતા હોઈએ ત્યાં બાજુ માંથી સ્ટાર્ટ થતા ખટારા ની નોઝલ માં થી નીકળતો અર્ધબળેલા અશુદ્ધ ડીઝલ નો ધુમાડો અને મેશ તમને 'ભલે પધાર્યા' કરે છે.  જયારે અહી  તમારી કાર ફ્રી વે (હાઈ વે) પર મર્જ થાય ત્યારે જાણે એક રક્તકણ અમેરિકા ની ધમની માં ઉમેરાય છે અને તમે એમાં વહેતા રક્ત ના ધક્કા નો અનુભવ કરો છો અને તેમાં ભળી જાઓ છો.

અહી ફ્રી વે પર દૂર દૂર સુધી ફક્ત સડસડાટ વહી જતો કાર પ્રવાહ જ દેખાય છે. રસ્તો જયારે વળાંક લે કે પછી ઉતરતા ઢાળ પર હોય ત્યારે સામે દસ-બાર લેન માં 120-140 ની ઝડપે લહેરાતી કારો ના ઝૂમખાં જોવા જેવો આનંદ બીજો કોઈ નથી.

ફ્રી વે પર બીજો કોઈ કચરો નહિ. ના કોઈ રીક્ષા , ના કોઈ ધુમાડો ઓકતો ખટારો , કે ના કોઈ 2 વ્હીલરીયા. રોડ ના કિનારા ચોક્ખા છે; કોઈ ભેગી થયેલી ધૂળ કે રેતી નહિ. કોઈ રખડતા લોકો નહિ કે  નહિ ડિવાઈડર પર પડેલો બેભાન ભિખારી.

તમે રબર ના ટાયર રોડ ના આસ્ફાલ્ટ પર દોડે ત્યારે થતો અવાજ સાંભળ્યો છે? એ અવાજ સંભાળવા માટે પણ વાતાવરણ માં બીજો બધો ઘોંઘાટ ઓછો હોવો જોઈએ. એ અવાજ પણ એક ઘોંઘાટ જ છે પણ ચોક્કસ મને તો એ પ્રગતિ નું સંગીત જ લાગે છે.

List of things one doesn't know

What does a resume of a professional contain? Apart from professional history, invariably a section on skills, or things that he/she knows. Professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, encourage maintaining a list of skills and have other people in your network endorse you for essentially 'things that you consider you know'. Or LinkedIn always helps by suggesting what skills you may have or you might be already knowing it based on data from your resume. ;)

How about maintaining a list of things that we don't know?

I came to know that, Feynman maintained a list of things he didn't know (mainly scientific topics). (Ref book: No Ordinary Genius). May be it was a todo list of physics concepts to conquer.

I also remember maintaining a list of things to do/revise before important exams and iron out the difficulties in understanding. I am sure, lot of other students will relate to this.

List of things that we don't know is not just a subtraction of things that we know (from the infinite). Such a list will give insight into what a person considers important. Items appearing on that list will also mean that may be he already knows about those topics but considers it tantalizingly inadequate so as to compel him into inquiring more about it. Such a list will also instill some level of modesty into one's claims. In the era of extrovert and hyperbole fueled by social networking sites, this will be a fresh break.

Somebody at Indian Institute of Science (IISc) told me about the admission interviews and how one should judge candidates. Nobody expects the candidates to be perfect, but they expect the candidate to be cohesive in his knowledge and whether he knows boundaries of his knowledge and of course  how he proceeds from his limited knowledge to discover new facts logically. Well, that is essence of a the scientific method. One of the key thing is to know what one doesn't know and avoid 'hand waving' type of arguments.

Well, according to me, 'hand waving' is for salesmen ;) and scientific/mathematical truth stands alone without support from anything else.

Looking from other way, to claim absolute mastery over something in the information age is absurd (and wrong). Also, claiming a proficiency level in knowing/doing something is also faulty at best.

Such a list (of things that one doesn't know) will help understand the person/professional more as a whole.
